Esmee and Becky recently spent the week at Five Islands Academy delivering Step Up, one of our flagship programmes supporting young people to develop skills for working together well, understanding each other and becoming confident leaders.

Throughout the week, the Year 6 children explored what it means to listen, how we can show empathy, and developed their work in circles. The week culminated in them putting those skills into action, running circles for the younger years, being ‘circle keepers’, and creating space for others to get to know each other better.

When we deliver Step Up, we are always reminded of the importance of trusting young people with responsibility and sharing tools and skills to develop their leadership.  They really can have a huge impact on people and communities around them.

We’re looking forward to working with the same children when they are in Year 9, building on this foundation and deepening their learning through Restorative peer mediation.

This work is part of an on going and well established partnership, and we are proud to have worked with every child in the school over the past 5 years. It is this consistency and commitment which achieves meaningful and sustained impact at the most remote school in England, 28 miles off the Cornish Coast.
