Meet Scarlett, our Truro College work experience student!

This week we have welcomed Scarlett, a student from Truro College, for a week of work experience at RJ Working! Here’s what she had to say…

During my time on work I experience at RJ Working, I have learned many useful things about how restorative practices may be used to help support change, not only in daily life but in institutions such as schools.
Restorative practices allow us to undo or repair harm by simply talking to each other and allowing us to understand the other’s viewpoint.

I went into Penwith College on the second day of my work experience with RJ Working where we talked with a group of students about how climate change affects us all and how restorative practices can be used to help bring about change. We carried out interactive activities that made the students think about climate change and ways in which we can make a difference. We asked them questions like how we can reduce unnecessary consumerism and what they thought Cornwall would look like 30 years in the future in their ideal vision. Moreover, we drew up mind maps about how we can achieve that future and how we can start making a change.

I found this to be a very good way of hearing the students’ opinions and how we can help start making a change my simply talking to each other. I very much enjoyed seeing restorative practices in action and I also enjoyed hearing how the students felt.

Whilst at RJ Working, I also participated in team meetings about a plan to make a short film on the climate crisis involving media students and how we intended for it to address this issue. This offered me a deep insight into how much planning goes on at RJ Working and how much thought is put into each and every project.

Overall, I have very much enjoyed my time on work experience with RJ Working and seeing how restorative practices are such a useful tool that allows everybody to make a change and fully understand each other, whilst also ensuring that nobody’s voice goes unheard. RJ Working has taught me some very valuable lessons about how change starts with talking, and I intend to carry those lessons with me into the future and to share them with others to help bring about change.
