Between November and January, RJ Working and Camborne Science and International Academy (CSIA) successfully raised £10,216 in a joint fundraiser for an exciting new community project. The funds will be used to develop a School Food Garden: polytunnels, raised beds, new gardening tools, seedlings, bee hives and a Ridan Pro-composting machine.
In the local press, CSIA’s Principal Emma Haase explained ‘A garden of this nature has the potential to transform how our students learn about food, sustainability and the environment, and the benefits could be enormous.’
This project will promote using home-grown produce, both in school lunches and for selling to the wider community. The new School Food Garden will support young people to connect with nature, while they learn the skills to respond to climate change in their daily lives.
Mrs Hasse added ‘We hope [this project] becomes a catalyst for even more innovative, community-driven projects in the years ahead.’
Alongside gaining practical skills and fresh produce, young people will be supported through CSIA’s partnership with RJ Working to develop their teamwork and leadership abilities. Restorative practice supports young people to lead ‘circle conversations’, developing collaborative problem-solving and decision-making, building positive relationships to support one another in school and in their wider community.
