Climate Dice

A cube for your thoughts

My name is Shriya (she/her), I’ve recently began a new role at RJ Working as a Young People’s Project Worker in East Cornwall. My role involves running projects that inspire young people to take on life’s harms restoratively. I find my biggest motivator being able to inspire young minds on the impact of the climate crisis. The Climate Dice has been a useful tool in doing this creatively. It fills me with hope to know that a cube could play a huge part in changing minds and this world.

Taking time for a deep breath and reconnecting to the joys of pure, child-like imagination was unexpected on a working Wednesday afternoon. I am incredibly grateful that Pendar and his work bring back the whimsical, magical gift that lies in all of us – our sense of wonder. We rolled the dice and observed its six faces; beautiful wooden sides finished with images that reflect nature. The more I observed, the more I realised that the web of life is deeply interconnected.

We were then challenged to use our storytelling skills to weave these images into a story. Our team took turns sharing two dice’s worth of our mind’s imaginings and then passed it on to the next colleague to continue. It was one of the most engaging and heartwarming icebreakers that I had ever experienced, and I’ve experienced a lot of them having been involved in yearly youth leadership camps since I was 14.

Over the 20 minutes of creating RJ Working’s dicey adventures, we had all learned about the different lenses we use to interpolate the climate crisis. We touched upon the perils of air travel, melting ice caps, the wisdom of nature and vines made of strings. It was an enriching session that helped us gain clarity and solidarity. Knowing that we had deepened our knowledge of the climate crisis and tapped into a once-forgotten inner child together built up and strengthened our team. I also can see how the dice can be used to combat the pressure of Eco-Anxiety. After the session, I was grounded in the knowing that we are all working for the greater good and are there for each other.

Overall, my experience with the Climate Dice was positive, it is an engaging way to build new neural pathways and grow an understanding towards our generations biggest challenge. I am looking forward to using it to improve youth engagement on climate change through my work in East Cornwall.
