Behind the scenes with Rhea on her internship!

Rhea, who is studying Zoology at the University of Exeter, has been our intern this term. Here’s what she has to say about her experience…

During my internship at RJ working, I have learned more about the fundamentals of restorative practice, and how it can be applied to so many aspects of our everyday lives – from environmental restoration, and conflict resolution, which can be applied to so many different levels within the education sector.

Upon the start of my internship, I was granted the opportunity to attend the Cambourne Youth Conference, in which the theme was ‘communication’. Students were presented different scenarios where communication is utilised, such as social relationships, industry, and nature. It was interesting to see which of the talks influenced the students most, and to see where they were most inspired! We asked them afterwards to list three main points they took from the talks, and it was nice to see how they interpreted the different lessons taught to them.

I found that by presenting their thoughts on paper afterwards to the rest of the conference, although nerve-wracking, definitely made it more personal towards them, and hopefully gave them the opportunity to reflect on how it influences them on a daily basis as well.

I was also able to participate in a visit to Bodriggy school in Hayle, where the students were able to put their input into the town councils plans of adding to their own local library. It was inspiring how, when each granted an opportunity to speak in a circle using a talking piece (which in this specific scenario was an adorable little teddy), how much more enthusiastic they were to share their own thoughts and ideas, which they stated there wouldn’t usually be enough time for in their typical classroom.

Overall, I am incredibly  grateful for the time I have spent interning with RJ working, and the diverse skills I’ve gained using restorative practice. Working with the team here has taught me valuable lessons about approaching interactions restoratively , and most importantly, ensuring the youth are able to use their voices effectively!
